Frequently Asked Questions - Rockabye River Play Mat

We are here to help you with your questions about our quality play mats. If you have any further questions, please contact us

The Rockabye River play mat is made from a non-toxic, thick TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) foam. This is a superior and premium material for baby play mats because it is highly shock absorbent, non-toxic, light weight yet durable. Additionally, this material is even biodegradable under composting conditions! Safety is our number one priority and that is why our play mats are tested to pass European Toy Standard testing (EN 71), absolutely confirming that there are no heavy metals, phthalates, formamide or any other nasties. Check out our link here to see our reports.

Unlike many of the low quality PVC and EVA foam mats, Rockabye River play mats have no strong chemical smell, so they do not need ‘airing’ out before use. Additionally, TPU is much more shock absorbent (and safer) than the cheaper alternatives.

Our play mats have been rolled up pretty tightly in order to fit all of that squishy, foamy goodness into the packing box. This might mean the edges maintain a curl for a little while, and you might see some creases (just like baby chub rolls). This is perfectly normal and will settle with time, but here are a few tips to try and speed up the process:

Lay the mat so that the curled in side is facing down.

Roll the mat tightly in the opposite direction to how it was packaged. You can use the velcro straps to keep it like this for as long as you can wait.

We have designed our reversible mats so that they can always be on display, featuring a home décor loving side in addition to our engaging playful illustrations. However, if you do need to temporarily store our mats, the Velcro straps included in your delivery are perfect for the job, so make sure you don’t throw them away.

Ensure that there are no sharp edges of all products used on our play mates. Heavy, narrow items such as sofa legs will cause dents in the soft, flexible material, and this can cause permanent damage. Unless you know you will never move the furniture, we do not recommend this.

Our large play mats are 2 m x 1.4 m. This is a great size to fit the family on, and it looks perfect as a replacement to or on top of your rug in front of your lounge set or in the play room. At the moment, we only have this one size, however we plan on expanding this range in the future. Follow us on social media to keep up-to-date with all of our product launches.

TPU foam is non-toxic and biodegradeable because we keep out all of the harsh, dangerous chemicals, colours and stabilisers. For this reason it is possible for this material to discolour slightly over time. You may notice a slight yellowing along the play mats edges and in the pale coloured/ white areas. This is considered normal and is a result of maintaining an eco friendly and completely non-toxic product. Keeping your play mat out of direct sunlight and away from extreme heat helps to reduce this process.

Absolutely, we love using our waterproof playmat outside on the odd occasion. However, do not leave your playmat outside for extended periods or too regularly, because as described above, direct sunlight and extreme heat speeds up the discolouration process of our eco-friendly non-toxic material. This product has ultimately been designed for indoor use.

Our waterproof, one piece play mats are the ultimate product to handle all of those newborn, toddler, tween and teen spills, crafts and snacks. We recommend using a damp cloth with water or a soft detergent such as dishwashing liquid to gently clean the surface of your mat. Do not use harsh chemicals, bleach or an abrasive scrubbing material as this will damage the outer layer of your play mat. For hygiene purposes, ensure your play mat is not left damp.

Unfortunately not, due to the long lead times and high quantity minimum orders from our manufacturers. We have chosen what we believe to be the best design combinations, but we plan to expand this range over time. Follow us on social media to keep up to date with our newest designs and let us know which combinations you want to see more of!
